This project is a proposal for a theater located on the Delmar Loop in St. Louis, Missouri. The theatre expresses two characters through natural light and shadows during the day time and electric lighting during the evening. The form of the theatre was developed through building shadows using character models based on a precedent. This form is incorporated throughout the project and is highlighted in the garden outside of the theatre.
The second part of the project is the construction of various material models which I have used as the facade around the building. It creates beautiful shadow patterns on the site during both the day and night and allows for a connection to the outdoors while still retaining privacy. During the day it creates an active pattern with natural daylight and is similar to light filtering through tree canopy. The office space and balconies above were also strategically placed to face the thick foliage of the trees at the back of the building. It offers a sense of peacefulness compared to the bustle of Delmar. The theatre also includes two ballet studios, a large cafe, and plenty of open space for social gatherings and community activities.
